Getting through Hellfire

  • Mar. 12th, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Bah, I knew I should have taken a safer, insanity-proof course during college. Like Music.

This week had been like a trip through walls and walls of Hellfire...and there is still two months to go before my licensure exams. God help me, but I'm feeling perfectly horrid today. (sigh)

Even with the roomier schedule (after I had announced a hiatus from writing and beta-ing in ffnet), I find myself struggling to study volumes upon volumes of topics that I have planned to read--and should have finished reading--by the end of the day. It seems that the more I study, the more these darn notes and books keep popping up on my bed, my study table, my floor...you get the idea. Total chaotic mess, all locked up in my one-bedroom apartment.

It's a good thing my parents allowed me to study and live by myself in the meantime, or else my mother would have an aneurism at the first glance at my living room. You can't even see the couch now; everything is covered in notes, books, and balls upon balls of scrapped paper. One lit match and BOOM. Bye-bye apartment.

Anyway, despite the fact that I have forced upon myself an unbreakable rule to study for the last ever exam I will have to take, I find myself doodling upon the margins of my book or notebook (whichever is on hand at the present) about the stories I have left unfinished and hanging at ffnet. As such, even though I am on hiatus, I actually posted the eighth chapter to Blinding Light and the seventh (or also eighth?) chapter to Unsung, Untold.

I should be feeling guilty I know, but I don't. I actually feel quite satisfied with the posting. (sigh) I don't know whether to feel proud or what.

Anyway, I just hope a lot of people give positive reviews. It's one of the few things that can actually uplift my sorely stressed spirits at the moment.

Well, can't say anymore here. Better get back to the books, ladies and gentlemen...

And after everything that's been said and done, all the hype really wasn't worth it.

After the high expectations built by the phenomenal books of the Twilight series, I was actually disappointed about how the movie turned out. Okay, okay, maybe I'm not giving it enough credit, but really...the movie was obviously on a low budget, and the plot had been royally screwed. They even took out a character from the book! (Ben Chenney, guys. Where was Ben Chenney?)

I must admit though, the trailer was good. Good enough to make even non-fans of S. Meyer's book to take interest and buy tickets to the movie. I actually asked a few friends who have never read the Twilight series if they loved the movie. They actually did, and they couldn't wait to watch the next installment.

Hmm. Maybe I've got a twisted, weird taste for 'good' movies.

Still, the movie was not a total loss. Stewart was a good Bella, and although R. Pattinson didn't exactly personify Edward Cullen (I mean, he looked near to tears during the Port Angeles scene with the drunks), his acting was still above average. Slightly. I still felt like he was a bit stiff, the way he portrayed Cedric Diggory in the HP movies.

Best Scene(s): Baseball in the meadow (really cool)
Worst Scene(s): Ballet room (don't go all violent on me--it's my opinion!), and any other scene where the vampires were supposed to move really fast...on screen it looks like it was just fast forwarded. Lame.
Best Character Portrayed: Hmm...hard pick this. I'm going with Emmett and James.
Worst Character Portrayed: Eric. Don't even get me started. I mean, what was with the worm and the kid-on-sugar-high attitude?

Score: 2 1/2 out of 5

-ehem- Ladies and gentlemen, I am (as of now) a certified Junjou Romantica Addict! AHAHAHAHAHA! :D

I just discovered the manga today, and I have been hooked ever since this morning! Arguably the best yaoi genre manga I have seen on the face of this miserable and lonely planet! The best part about it is that they've already started releasing the anime series in Japan, and the good and wonderful people of Aarinfantasy have been subbing them in English!

Now I truly believe there are still some good things on Earth worth having. (sigh)#

Blog entry: Foolery at its finest

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 9:30 AM

I think my heart will soar the moment I know my name will be put down on the list of students who will graduate by the end of October. After five and a half years, boxes of photocopied notes, and dismal (my mother called them "appalling", and I would have to agree) grades, my soul shall finally sing with that one word: "FINALLY".
Then after fifteen seconds if holding back the urge to caper around like a jackdaw fool, there will be silence.
I will be graduating. I won't be going to school as a regular routine anymore.
...what on earth am I going to do now?

Truth is a far greater thing than anyone thinks. It is also something that everyone, regardless of race or stature, deserves to know. This is one of the foundations that built journalism, and led me--and countless others--down the path of writing. But although I find writing news a self-appointed duty, I realize that writing stories fueled by my imagination is a thousand times more exhilarating. I think I was born to be a fiction writer. But that's just me.

A famous person once said that politicians are often mad (crazy) and that if we don't put psychotics in high places we won't have any problems. Well. That makes a lot of sense.
Oh wait a minute. You mean we're letting addicts run the country?

My sister has a weird way of turning a bleak outlook on her extremely difficult subjects (she studies Pharmacy). She thinks of them as a challenge. "And for that," she says, "I love my professor in ___, because s/he is the only person who has challenged me like this my entire life. I love him/her, I really do."
Okay. It's time for me to start sending love letters to a LOT of people. Professors included.

Life has so many possibilities that I can only find one word to suit it: unpredictable. The unexpected waits on our doorstep every morning, and what do we do? We continue our lives as rigidly as we could, follow schedules and routines, and practically drain the life out of existence. Our humanity, our soul, leeches away day by day until only drones are left, and the only adventure you would find is in a book. Or the memory of the memory of a book.
The moment I step out of university, I intend to have an adventure. Or continue the one I'm already in.#

I'm calling out to all those La Corda D'Oro anime and manga fanatics out there! If you know the names of Kahoko's relatives (her mom, her older sister and older brother) then please tell me! It will be highly appreciated if you help me out; I don't think my fic would justify the anime if I just made up names for them.

Send me a comment here or send me am private message through my fanfiction account. Thanks in advance!

"Malungkot ako. Walang danggit." - my sister while ordering at Chowking

Manila has some crazy weather today, but then where in the world is the weather considered sane, anyway? With global warming throwing everything out of whack, it's not hard to believe everything's gone crazy, no?

Speaking of crazy, why is it that some people do random acts of insanity when you least expect it? I mean, come on people; we live in a society where anything not allowed by law is called illegal and anything incomprehensible is called unacceptable. And then you go ahead and do something crazy?

Allow me to explain.

I was watching a show aired in a local station last Sunday. Nothing too fancy; just a magazine-type of show you know, one that features a lot of things that would pique our interest. The theme for the show was something along the lines of the "different flavors of life". There's the sweetness of undying love...something like that. Then they featured something that would embody sourness.

Here, ladies and gentlemen, is where the crazy stuff begins (you have been warned).

To us Pinoys, when you say a woman still has "asim" (aka sourness), it means she still got the stuff to attract men. Think of it as the X-factor of sexiness. So they featured one such woman. Nothing crazy, right? Wrong. Dead WRONG.

Specially when the woman in question is a sixty (or seventy) something ex-fortune teller turned singer!

There was only one way to describe it: an abomination. I thought half of my brain cells dropped dead from shock at seeing an old lady shake her hips while donned in bright pink leotards and a sleeveless body-fitting blouse and shades, accompanied by teenage boys! Singing her song (that, IMO, would NEVER reach the bottom place of any music chart anywhere in the universe)!

I actually screamed in horror when I saw her music video.

The horror. The torture (not to mention the trauma)!

To people out there who know what I mean, just watch her video on youtube. *shudder*

I don't have anything against her, really. I don't hate her. It's just so wrong to watch someone insist that they can sing, can be found attractive still, when you're already way past the menopause stage. Sure you can show your "young at heart" attitude. But there's a right time and place (and manner) of showing it.

And making an album and a music video with teenage boys is NOT the right way to go about it.

Update entry: On fanfiction.net stories

  • Jun. 28th, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Hey, I did say this blog was going to contain a whole lot of literary everything, right?

So. For all of you out there watching for updates on my stories in fanfiction.net...I already have chapter nine of (Cat)astrophe! out, as well as chapter five of Unsung, Untold. The sixth chapter of Blinding Light will be up in about...a week at least. I am alos currently in the process of writing a plotline for several new fics, most of them one-shots. Please be on the look-out for those, yeah?

I'm also thinking of posting the stories right here, so wait a few days and maybe I'll manage to do just that. :) #

Book review: Artemis Fowl - The Lost Colony

  • Jun. 28th, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Yeah, I know this book had been released like, months ago, but I thought sharing with you what I think about it would be helpful in some small measure.

Being the fifth installment of the well-known Artemis Fowl series, The Lost Colony centers on the fourteen year-old's most recent and dastardly plan yet: meeting a demon. The thing is, he is not the only one with the plan. A twelve year-old genius herself, Minerva Paradizo plans not only to meet a demon, but to capture one and use it to nab a Noble Prize.

Of course, plans can go haywire when you least expect them to.

Eoin Colfer delivers the same action-filled and fast paced mood, the same witty one-liners, and the memorable cast of characters that made Artemis Fowl such a worldwide hit. This time though, he introduces a new character, one who just might be the match for our young genius.

The good points: To AF fans, you're going to love this fifth installment. It's got all the action and the humor, plus a dash of something else? It would be the first time you'll ever see Artemis Fowl in a (dare I say) endearing light? To new readers, this is going to be a fresh new perspective on a young hero in a young adult fantasy novel. The bad points: I thought it was a bit too short, and sometimes a bit too fast-paced for my taste. But then, that's just me. The price: At 288 php (Fully Booked) in its paperback version, I say it's a good value for your money. Other points: I can't wait to see the movie, hehe.

All in all: I give the book an eight out of ten. :) It lost two points since aside from the comment in the previous paragraph, it's darn difficult getting a copy.

Blog entry: What the cat dragged in...

  • Jun. 18th, 2008 at 10:54 PM

...was a heap-load of nonsense I shall now generously share with all of you. Note that this entry is pure rambling nonsense, made out of boredom and a dash of contemplation. And insanity. Did I mention insanity?

I don't know which is weirder: wasabi-flavored sherbet or the fact that the only thing I ever want to do in the world is to write novels but I'm trying to finish my degree in Accountancy. Since I entered high school I've been pretty sure writing was the only thing for me, but because I was struck by a once-in-a-blue-moon streak of practicality and I listened to what my parents said (for once), I actually chose to study a business-related course. Not that I'm complaining: I like fiddling with numbers, and knowing that I'm actually playing with figures that equates money is just an added perk. Plus accountancy gives me a challenge.

Heh. Who am I kidding? This course is damn difficult. But I don't regret taking it.

Maybe it's because I decided to compensate by signing up for the college paper; so while I'm studying I can satisfy my writing urges and even publish something. The end result? A lot of good times definitely, but a few not-so-good ones, too. Including the fact that I failed a few subjects over the course of two years.

But enough of that; who wants to hear about me moaning about how stupid I was to fail? What I want to talk about is nonsense, and nonsense I shall deliver!

Nonsense number one: I came across a book today with a really weird title. Are men really necessary? My reaction: what the hell? Of course they're necessary! I mean, women won't have anyone to manipulate and wind around their little fingers if men aren't there! (woot for women! heh, I'm so biased) Whoever wrote that book must be really desperate to write something, or the person just wanted to annoy a lot of people. Hmm.

Nonsense number two: I also found (in a bookstore) a little pink dictionary of gay lingo. Funny as hell, very entertaining, and can help draw a lot of odd looks in your direction when you're waiting in line to pay for a couple of notebooks and a pen. The only thing I could complain about it was the fact that it was thin. I mean, there must be over a million homosexuals out there, and they could only come up with a thin book? It clearly shows that homosexuals are severely under represented in this world. And that they love the color pink for some odd reason.

Not-so nonsense: To all Filipino amateur writers, writer wanna-be's, and even professional writers, Dean and Nikki Alfar are now accepting submissions for Philippine Speculative Fiction Volume 4! For more details, visit:
http://deanalfar.blogspot.com

    Go all Filipino writers! Woot!

...and another livejournal blog is born for everyone's viewing pleasure (or torment, whichever you prefer). I created Moiraine's Attic so I have a place where I can put up all my written outputs (from trash to decent works of fiction) both in prose and poetry. And, hopefully, people would send me some feedback to help me grow as a writer.

If you've already scrolled through the blog you'll find it's mostly empty. Erm yeah, my fault, that. I should have a few things up by the end of the week. Some of them I've also posted on a few fiction sites (ffnet for one thing), and there would be a lot of fan fiction. But there would be a lot of original works, too. And plain blog entries where I spew stuff I mull over during the day and want to share with you. :)

So yes. The welcome mat has been rolled open, thwacked hard with a stick to take out the dust, and patted into place on the doorway. Welcome to Moiraine's Attic.
